April 20, 2020

Dear Students and Parents,

All prorated credits for the Spring 2020 term have now been completed and posted to student accounts.  The next step for our office is to begin the process of completing any applicable refunds for students who wish to receive them.

A second email discussing this was sent out today (Viewable here)

In synopsis, there will be 4 groups of how we handle student prorated credits, and it will be in the below order:

  1. Many students have requested to be able to leave their prorated credits on the student account for future term use.

    • If you have never enrolled in direct deposit with our office, no action is needed on your part to keep this credit on your account.
    • If you have enrolled in direct deposit in the past, wish to maintain the credit on your account and have not already been refunded, you MUST delete your bank information by 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, or our system will automatically process your refund to the enrolled bank account. This request can be completed by clicking the button below.  Once there, sign in and replace your bank account number with a single "0".  Be sure to leave your routing number and name information as normal . Submit the form and we will process to leave the credit on your account. Delete Bank Information
  2. Refunds to students who received financial aid for the spring 2020 term and are enrolled in direct deposit will have their refund automatically deposited to their enrolled bank account.
  3. Refunds to students who did not receive financial aid and are enrolled in direct deposit will have any applicable refund automatically deposited to their enrolled bank account.
  4. In early June we will post on this web page how to request a refund request for:
    • mailed paper refund checks
    • international payments paid through Flywire to be returned via Flywire

Note: The exact timing to complete the above phases is difficult to estimate.  We are processing as quickly as is possible.

Additionally, in an effort to assist families, our office will NOT be assessing the typical late fees nor new account holds preventing future term registration on student account balances in March or April, 2020.

To our Students and Parents;

In conjunction with University of Maryland as a whole, our office is currently closed to in person visitors.  We are still staffed remotely and working for you during standard office hours and can receive emails at billtalk@umd.edu or by phone at 301-314-9000. Please bear with us as some services may be delayed or temporarily unavailable due to external department closures.

If you have a financial aid credit on your account and are expecting a refund, please be sure you have enrolled in direct deposit to receive these funds.  We do not have the capability to print and mail checks to those who are not enrolled in direct deposit at this time.  You may enroll with any account of your choosing quickly at https://billpay.umd.edu/refunds

If you are intending to make a payment to your account please do so online and not through physical mail as we are not able to receive USPS deliveries currently.  As always, there is no fee for an ACH electronic check payment completed online.  https://billpay.umd.edu/inquiry/makepayment

We will update this message with any new pertinent information relating to UMD student accounts here as it becomes available.

Thank you
